Physical Education

Why do we teach Physical Education?

Within Hawthorn Primary School, we believe a high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport, physical activities along with opportunities for orienteering and leadership.

It provides opportunities for pupils to become physically confident which supports their health and fitness. Exciting opportunities to compete in sport, competitive fixtures and other activities, builds the children’s character and helps to embed values such as fairness and respect.

Children who experience a wide variety of sports and physical skills will find it enhances life-long fitness, life choices and potential career opportunities. Physical Education challenges and promotes self-esteem through the development of physical confidence, resilience and perseverance, along with a growth and positive mindset, which is taught in P.S.H.E lessons. It teaches children to cope with both success and failure in competitive, individual and team based physical activities.

The purpose of teaching Physical Education is to provide children the tools and experiences, along with the understanding required to make a positive impact in their own physical health and well-being. Children also have opportunities to experience life skills such as riding a bike through Bikeability.
